Optimization of Injection/Withdrawal Schedules for Natural Gas Storage Facilities∗

چکیده

Control decisions for gas storage facilities are made in the face of extreme uncertainty over future natural gas prices on world markets. We examine the problem faced by owners of storage contracts of how to manage the injection/withdrawal schedule of gas, given past price behavior and a predictive model of future prices. Real options theory provides a framework for making such decisions. We describe the theory behind our model and a software application that seeks to optimize the expected value of the storage facility, given capacity and deliverability constraints, via Monte-Carlo simulation. Our approach also allows us to determine an upper bound on the expected valuation of the remaining storage facility contract and the gas stored therein. The software application has been successfully deployed in the energy trading division of a gas utility.

Natural Gas Storage Valuation, Optimization, Market and Credit Risk Management

In this paper we present a model for the valuation, optimization, market and credit risk management of natural gas storage facilities and associated derivative contracts. A reduced form Markovian term structure model for the gas forward curve is developed and is shown to describe over 98% of the total historical variation of the fluctuations of the Henry Hub Futures curve. This approach facilit...

A Numerical Investigation into the Effect of Controllable Parameters on the Natural Gas Storage in a Weak Reservoir-type Aquifer

Natural gas storage process in aquifer, due to fluid flow behavior of gas and water in the porous medium and because of their contact with each other under reservoir conditions, faces several challenges. Therefore, there should be a clear understanding of the injected gas behavior before and after the injection into the reservoir. This research simulates the natural gas storage in aquifer by us...

Natural Gas Storage Valuation and Optimization: A Real Options Application

In this paper we present an algorithm for the valuation and optimal operation of natural gas storage facilities. Real options theory is used to derive nonlinear partial-integro-differential equations (PIDEs) for the valuation and optimal operating strategies. The equations are designed to incorporate a wide class of spot price models that can exhibit the same time-dependent, mean-reverting dyna...

OPTIMIZATION OF TREE-STRUCTURED GAS DISTRIBUTION NETWORK USING ANT COLONY OPTIMIZATION: A CASE STUDY

An Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm is proposed for optimal tree-structured natural gas distribution network. Design of pipelines, facilities, and equipment systems are necessary tasks to configure an optimal natural gas network. A mixed integer programming model is formulated to minimize the total cost in the network. The aim is to optimize pipe diameter sizes so that the location-alloc...

Selection of the Best Efficient Method for Natural Gas Storage at High Capacities Using TOPSIS Method

Nowadays one of the most important energy sources is natural gas. By depletion of oil reservoirs in the world, natural gas will emerge as the future energy source for human life. One of the major concerns of gas suppliers is being able to supply this source of energy the entire year. This concern intensifies during more consuming seasons of the year when the demand for natural gas increases, r...
